Many students agreed with Josh Hamilton (Gr. 6) that the seminar was a success. “I thought the socratic seminar was pretty good. ” However, as Sebastian Deustua (Gr. 6) noted, it took some getting used to for some students.  “Some people got a little off task. Other than that, it was pretty good.” The web article, Facing History And Ourselves explains that “In a Socratic Seminar activity, students help one another understand the ideas, issues, and values reflected in a text through a group discussion format.” A Socratic seminar is a great way for students to learn more about what they are studying and collaborate with the other students in their class. This activity is gaining popularity with AOM teachers as it teaches students to take control of their own learning. For now, Sebastian thinks it has been seen as a huge success for Mrs. Hauck-Wood’s class.“I thought the Socratic seminar was pretty cool…it’s fun to discuss things with other people.”   Juliana Proctor (Gr.6) sees the value in it as well.“We actually get have a conversation about what we are learning” This is a great way to let students speak their mind in front of the class, and build confidence in their own ideas.
